Bloodwork is a mainstay in veterinary medicine and has saved the lives of countless patients. It is just one of the many modalities of diagnostics offered at our hospital. No. No anesthesia or numbing is required because pets will feel only a slight pinch when the blood is being drawn.
Please let us know beforehand so we can make the necessary adjustments. In rare instances – for example canines or felines with fears of needles – we can administer sedation to prevent the patient from undergoing stress. Rest assured our staff is trained on the nuisances of treating pets with behavioural conditions.
Before surgery, bloodwork will be needed to determine if your furry companion is a good candidate for anesthesia and the amount of anesthesia they need. If the veterinarian notices a concerning symptom, they may request bloodwork to get more information to support their diagnosis. Bloodwork may also be done during a comprehensive examination especially for senior pets or those who are being treated for certain types of conditions to monitor results.
